Return of the Mac: Chibuku at the Masque

Radio 1's finest, Annie Mac, comes back to Chibuku this weekend, heading up one of the best party lineups you'll see all winter. Plus: win tickets!

- by Stephanie Heneghan

There aren’t many Chibukus left this year. In fact, to be more specific, there are two more Chibukus left this year which is a bit bloody scary and makes us go “oooh where has the time gone, hasn’t this year flown by” etc etc.

To distract us from indulging in well worn clichéd phrases, let’s turn our attention to this Saturday’s line up and the musical cocktail that they specialise in serving up at The Masque. Returning favourite Annie Mac is pitching up in The Theatre after a standout year which has seen her Radio 1 show cement her reputation as a champion of new sounds. Joining Mac is another UK talent, Riton, who has evolved across the electronic scene during the last decade, and Chibuku’s very own James Rand will be on hand to get the evening’s proceedings warmed up.

Heading up to The Loft is where you’ll find one of Liverpool’s homegrown talents. Subfocus is a self-taught producer and lynchpin of the UK’s thriving drum and bass scene who began producing music on his PC at age 13 with his know-how gleaned from software manuals and bass scene. There’s also a very warm welcome back for Sir David Rodigan, a venerable gent who brings a touch of gravitas to the situation, and on his previous visit had the Chibuku crowd going wild for his mix of reggae, dancehall and ska.

And last but by no means least (we just can’t get enough of those clichés), head down to Ink to catch Roska doing his thing, along with label mate DJ Monki and Chibuku ressie Rich Furness. Phew!

Review: Bravo Figaro!

— A very different kind of show from Mark Thomas is a beautiful piece of work that doesn't patronise his father's illness, not ignore his frailties, as they connect over a love of opera.
