Radar: Sugar Man, Rodriguez at Liverpool Philharmonic

Known for his classic songs ‘Sugar Man’ and ‘I Wonder’, Rodriguez spent years in the wilderness. Now he's in town for a rare show at the Philharmonic Hall.

Anyone see that mesmerising documentary, Searching for Sugar Man - tracing the elusive career of Rodriguez: a hero in South Africa, and the greatest Rock’n'Roll star that never was? Well, you don’t have to search too hard, because the mysterious, captivating singer songwriter (thanks to the film’s deserved success) is coming to Liverpool.

Discovered in a Detroit bar in the late ’60s, Sixto Rodriguez should have been huge. His soulful melodies and Age of Aquarius mysticism couldn’t have been better suited to the time. Forty years later, they’re as fresh, sublime and beautiful as ever. That the 70 year old is finally getting the breaks is music to our ears too.

You can catch the film on September 5, at The Phil before seeing him live in November. See the film, and you’ll definitely be back for more.
